Why does a boutique bag repair take so long?
A boutique repair takes months because many luxury houses send bags to their own workshops, usually in Europe, for cleaning and restoration. A bag can be away for a whole season, so the summer tote you sent in comes back when it's time for winter. For a bag you carry every week, a specialist who works on it locally is the faster option.
What can bag restoration fix?
Bag restoration can fix most of the wear that makes a good bag look tired. The most common jobs are:
- Faded or scuffed corners and edges. Corners rub against tables and car seats, so they lose color first, whether it's a Chanel Classic Flap in lambskin or a Hermès Birkin in Togo leather.
- Darkened or stained handles. The untreated vachetta leather on a Louis Vuitton Speedy or Neverfull darkens with every hand that holds it.
- Stains on pale leather and suede. A cream Bottega Veneta Andiamo or a suede The Row Margaux shows every mark, and suede can't be wiped clean at home.
- Worn handles, straps and zips. These can be repaired or replaced without touching the rest of the bag.
- Stained or torn linings. Makeup and pens leak inside even the most structured bags, and a damaged lining can be replaced.
- Dull or scratched hardware. A Chanel turn-lock, a Chloé Paddington padlock or the clasp on a Miu Miu Arcadie can be re-plated in gold.
How do you clean a leather bag at home?
A routine clean of a leather bag takes about 15 minutes and needs only soft cloths and a vacuum with a brush attachment.
- Empty the bag completely and shake out the lining. Vacuum crumbs, sand and dust from the corners with the brush attachment.
- Wipe the outside with a soft, dry cloth to lift surface dust.
- For marks, use a cloth barely dampened with plain water. Test it on a hidden spot first, then wipe gently, a small area at a time.
- If the bag gets wet, blot it straight away with a lint-free, light-colored, absorbent cloth, as Louis Vuitton recommends, and let it dry naturally at room temperature.
- Store it stuffed with acid-free tissue in a breathable dust bag, away from sunlight and humidity, and never in a parked car.
Keep alcohol wipes, hand sanitizer, disinfectants and oils away from leather. Louis Vuitton's care guidance names hand sanitizers and disinfectants among the products to keep off its leather goods, and advises against mink oil and saddle soap. Spray perfume before you pick up the bag, not while you're holding it.

Frequently asked questions
Can a faded designer bag be restored?
Yes. Color restoration rebuilds lost color on worn corners, edges and handles, matched to the original shade of the leather. Home touch-up kits can leave a visible patch if the shade isn't matched exactly.
Can you replace the lining of a designer bag?
Yes. A stained or torn lining can be taken out and replaced without changing the outside of the bag, which is often the only way to deal with a leaked pen or foundation.
Can you use baby wipes on a leather bag?
It's safer not to. Wipes made for skin or surfaces can contain alcohol or cleaning agents that dry out leather or lift its finish, so a soft cloth barely dampened with plain water is the gentler choice.
How do you get ink out of a leather bag?
Don't rub the ink or treat it with alcohol, which can spread it and strip the leather's finish. Blot fresh ink with a dry cloth and take the bag to a leather specialist quickly, before the ink sets.
