In Dubai and Abu Dhabi, an everyday abaya is worn through long, hot months and washed often, so small habits add up. Iron shine is the glossy patch left when a hot iron flattens the surface of dark fabric so it reflects light unevenly, and once it appears it rarely comes out.

‍

What does the care label on an abaya tell you?

The care label gives the hottest water the abaya can take and whether it can be machine washed, tumble dried or ironed. The symbols follow the international care-labeling system used on clothes worldwide.

‍

  • A number in the wash tub is the maximum water temperature in °C. Never go above it.

  • One bar under the tub means a milder cycle with reduced mechanical action. Two bars mean a very mild cycle, like a wool program.

  • A hand in the tub means hand wash only, at a maximum of 40°C. Don't rub, pull or wring a hand-washed abaya.

  • A crossed-out tub means the abaya must not be washed in water. Take it to a professional cleaner.

  • A crossed-out tumble dryer (a square with a circle inside) means do not tumble dry.

  • Dots on the iron show the heat range. One dot is the lowest setting.

‍

How do you hand-wash an abaya step by step?

Hand-washing an abaya in cold water is the gentlest method at home, and it takes about 20 minutes.

‍

  1. Test for color bleed. Dab a damp white cloth on an inside seam. If dye comes off, always wash the abaya on its own.

  2. Shake out dust and sand, close any zips or press studs, and turn the abaya inside out.

  3. Fill a basin with cold water, below 30°C, and add a small amount of mild liquid detergent made for dark clothes.

  4. Press the abaya gently through the water for a few minutes. Don't rub, twist or wring it.

  5. Rinse in fresh cold water until no suds are left. Leave out fabric softener.

  6. Roll the abaya in a clean towel to press out excess water, then hang it on a wide hanger in the shade.

If the label allows machine washing, use a delicate cycle (one or two bars), cold water, a mesh laundry bag and a low spin speed, and wash it only with other dark items of a similar weight.

‍

How do you keep a black abaya from fading?

Keep a black abaya dark by washing it cold, inside out, with a detergent for dark clothes, and drying it in the shade. Heat, friction and sunlight are what fade it. Hot water and dryer heat loosen dye and can tighten fibers, so the abaya comes out shorter as well as duller. Friction in a crowded drum roughens the surface of the fabric, which makes black look gray. Strong sunlight fades dark dyes while the abaya dries.

Life in the UAE adds two more causes. Sweat and deodorant build up in the underarm and collar areas, and perfume or oud oil sprayed directly onto fabric can leave a mark that hot water sets. Spray fragrance onto skin, let it dry, and then dress.

‍

How do you iron an abaya without leaving a shine?

To avoid iron shine on an abaya, use a garment steamer, or iron it inside out at the lowest setting the label allows with a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric. Keep the iron moving and never press down on one spot. Silk abayas also water-spot easily, so steam them from a distance or leave them to a professional.

‍

When should you get an abaya professionally cleaned?

Some abayas aren't worth the risk at home: silk and chiffon, pieces with beading, embroidery or crystals, anything marked dry clean only, and stains that are already set. Washmen, the UAE laundry and dry cleaning app, cleans abayas through Clean & Press, priced per item. We match each garment to one of 50+ cleaning programs based on its fabric, stains and construction, and we flag risks before cleaning, such as color bleed or existing damage, so you know what to expect. Your clothes are never mixed with anyone else's, and they come back pressed on hangers. You can book Clean & Press in the Washmen app.

Frequently asked questions

Can you put an abaya in the dryer?

Most abayas should not go in a tumble dryer, because the heat can shrink the fabric and fade black dye. Check the care label: a square with a crossed-out circle means do not tumble dry.

‍

How do you protect the embroidery and buttons on an abaya?

Remove any detachable brooches or belts, close the buttons and press studs, and turn the abaya inside out so embroidery and beads face inward. Wash it by hand or in a mesh laundry bag so nothing catches on the drum, and iron from the reverse side over a towel so raised embroidery isn't flattened.

‍

How often should you wash an abaya?

Wash an everyday abaya after a few wears, or sooner after a hot day or a spill. Airing it on a hanger between wears means it needs washing less often, and fewer washes means less fading.

‍

How do you get perfume or oud oil out of an abaya?

Blot a fresh oil mark with a dry cloth and don't rub it or rinse it in hot water, which can set the oil into the fibers. For silk or embellished abayas, or a mark that has already set, take it to a professional cleaner and say what caused it.
